Strategic Acquisition of Spatial Intelligence Capabilities
Semiconductor manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs, an artificial intelligence research startup founded by renowned computer scientist Dr Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion. World Labs, established in 2024, specializes in developing spatial intelligence models designed to generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive 3D environments using text, imagery, and video inputs.
The technology offers direct applications across robotics learning, physical simulation, autonomous driving, and digital content generation. The acquisition represents AMD's second-largest transaction on record, following its $50 billion purchase of Xilinx in 2022. According to regulatory filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), AMD signed the merger agreement on 26 September. Subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions, the transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026.
Leadership Alignment and Hardware Integration
Under the terms of the merger, Dr Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, reporting directly to Chair and Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su. Li, frequently referred to as the "Godmother of AI" for her foundational work creating the ImageNet dataset that accelerated modern deep learning, will lead AMD's dedicated AI research team as World Labs continues its model research.
AMD was an existing investor in World Labs prior to the acquisition and had worked closely with the startup to run its spatial intelligence workloads on AMD Instinct graphics processing units (GPUs). By bringing World Labs in-house, AMD aims to gain direct visibility into evolving spatial and physical AI workloads, using those insights to inform future silicon, software, and systems engineering roadmaps.
Lisa Su highlighted that building compute platforms for the next generation of artificial intelligence requires a deep structural understanding of model trajectories. Incorporating World Labs gives AMD an in-house foundational model team to better compete against rival Nvidia as artificial intelligence expands into physical reasoning and robotics.
